I enlisted in the Navy in October of 1964.  Following a year of enlisted Nuclear Power Training, I served on two submarines in Charleston, South Carolina.  In 1968 I received a Navy scholarship and attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and graduated in 1972 with a degree in Chemistry. It is there I met my wife, Sue. We were married in September of 1970. After college graduation and being commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy, Sue and I were off to Norfolk, Virginia where I was a division officer on a destroyer, USS LEARY (DD 879).  After requesting to return to the submarine service I was stationed on submarines in Pearl Harbor as a Division Officer on USS PUFFER (SSN 652) and Department Head on USS SKATE (SSN 578) and then on to San Diego as Executive Officer on USS HOUSTON (SSN 713).

In 1990 I took command of the fast attack submarine USS PORTSMOUTH (SSN 707) in San Diego, California. In 1995, I took command of the trident ballistic missile submarine USS ALABAMA (SSBN 731), in Bangor, WA. I also had shore duty assignments teaching at Nuclear Power School in Orlando California, at the Pentagon on the Staff of the Director of Naval Intelligence and the staffs of Commander in Chief U. S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii and the Chief of Staff for Commander, Submarine Group NINE in Bangor, WA.  In August 1998 my final Navy assignment was Commanding Officer, Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center in San Diego, California.  After 36 years in the Navy I retired in October 2000.

Following retirement, Sue and I moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to work for Rockwell Collins and later Duane Arnold Energy Center, a nuclear power plant, before fully retiring in 2005. Sue and I currently reside there. Sue is from Garretson, South Dakota.  I enjoy golf, spending winters in Florida and doing ancestry research on my Norwegian heritage.
